Spain experiences two total solar eclipses in consecutive years, but the 2026 and 2027 events are very different observing problems.

2026: a late-day eclipse

The 12 August 2026 total eclipse crosses northern Spain and occurs with the Sun low in the western sky. That makes horizon selection especially important and produces a very different visual atmosphere.

2027: a morning eclipse in the south

The 2 August 2027 eclipse crosses the far south of Spain. The Sun is much higher, around 38 degrees in Barbate at maximum according to IGN/OAN municipal data, and totality lasts more than four minutes in parts of Cádiz province.

Duration

NASA gives a worldwide maximum of about 2 minutes 18 seconds for the 2026 eclipse and about 6 minutes 23 seconds for the 2027 eclipse. Spanish local durations are shorter than the respective worldwide maxima, but 2027 still offers unusually long totality in southern Spain.

Travel patterns

The 2026 path favours northern destinations; the 2027 path favours Cádiz, the western Costa del Sol, Ceuta, Melilla and other southern areas. Visitors should treat them as separate trips rather than assuming that experience from one event automatically solves the other.

Safety is identical

For both eclipses, certified solar protection is required during partial phases. The fact that one eclipse occurs at low solar altitude does not make unfiltered viewing safe.
