Barbate is well inside the path of totality for the 2 August 2027 eclipse. The current IGN/OAN municipal table gives an eclipse start at about 09:40:39, totality from 10:44:53 to 10:49:08, maximum at 10:47:00 and eclipse end at about 12:00:04, all in official local time.

How long is totality in Barbate?

The interval between second and third contact is about 4 minutes 15 seconds. That is a very long total phase by European standards and is the central reason Barbate is one of the strongest mainland bases for 2027.

What will happen during the morning?

The eclipse develops gradually for more than an hour before totality. During the partial phase the Sun must be viewed only through appropriate solar protection. As totality approaches, daylight drops quickly, shadows change and the environment can feel noticeably different. Only when the bright solar photosphere is completely covered may certified eclipse viewers be removed for direct viewing; they must go back on as soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears.

Why arrive the day before?

The total phase is short compared with the travel demand it can generate. Arriving on 1 August removes dependence on eclipse-morning traffic, provides time to understand access restrictions and lets you prepare equipment before the event begins.

Barbate Eclipse Village

Eclipse Village is being designed as a vehicle-based organised base for the night of 1 August and the eclipse morning. The project currently includes five vehicle categories: car/SUV, car plus tent, campervan/van, motorhome up to 6 metres and motorhome over 6 metres. Pre-registration records demand; it does not take payment or create a confirmed booking.

Use the exact coordinate

Municipal timings are an excellent planning reference, but contact times vary slightly across a municipality. Use the webapp’s exact-location calculator when you know your observation coordinate.
